Chicken Attacked by dogs Injured kneck

So sorry for your loss. :(

It's especially hard to make the decision to cull after working so hard to save a life and bonding extra with them during that process. I know because I have had to do it before. But I don't regret my decision to try hard or to finally end it.

I hope this won't be the complete end of chicken keeping for you. But of course would understand if it was. This site has helped me so much as well and that's why I still participate, to spread the good news or pay it forward. It's such a learning process and teaches me something new each day. You did the right thing. Thank you for sharing your difficult journey with us! :hugs

So very sorry for your loss, I've been following since the beginning and hoping for the best.
I think you did everything possible. I know it was hard, many of us have been there too. Amazing how attached we can get, and it is never, ever an easy decision. You did the right thing. Thank you for sharing, one never knows which experience is one that may help someone in the future.

Pearl is doing great. We are camping this weekend and she is enjoying the great outdoors and all the treats and attention she is getting from other campers.

Several have inquired as to how you crate and lease train your chicken. It is very easy - you put the harness in the chicken the night before when you put them in the crate. I use a medium dog harness with a ribbon around her chest in the front. The ribbon goes thru the leash rings on the back. This keeps the harness from falling off. Crate training is very easy. Chickens are smarter than most people - they know better than to crap in their nest . You put nesting material in the crate and cover the crate as soon as you put them in. In the morning you take them out and put them in the grass immediately. They will take care of their business.

Pearl stays likes to free roam in the yard during the day but come dusk - she is waiting at the back door to get in the house. I open the back door and she goes straight to her crate. That is after she makes a pit stop in the kitchen for a quick bedtime snack - cheese is her favorite.

We took her on her first golf cart ride last night. She loved it! This morning when I let her out the first thing she did was run jump on the golf cart.

I just had this happen to me too! I feel awful. I was in tending on my 6 week old chicks and the wind sucked the door of the coop open. It was a very windy day. Unfortunately 1 of my dogs was standing right outside the door waiting for me. He saw the chickens and i saw his eyes change. He went into predator mode! The door to the run was open, the chicks all ran outside, and so did the dog, only a few seconds to get to them, but in the end. 1 bird has a sore wing and is in mild shock, but no blood-thinking maybe a sprain? And the other has a very small amount of blood, now dried on her back between her wings. Ive only had my girls a week, so they are still afraid of me! I dont want to chase them around to try to catch her to have a better look. There are 5 chicks, 6 weeks old. Do i seperate them still? Or will they be ok together? Please help...

Hi @LorrieLea :frow Welcome To BYC
I'm sorry to hear about your chicks. When you can, please post some photos.

Are the 2 chicks still in shock? If they are, then try to put them somewhere quiet so they are not picked on. Offer fluids - sugar water, plain water, electrolytes, etc.

Did the dog actually catch the one that had a small amount of blood? Is she doing o.k.?
Inspect her for any more punctures, cuts or bruises - if you find any, trim feathers away so you can see better and keep the wound cleaner. Flush with saline, warm soapy water, chlorhexidine or betadine, then apply a triple antibiotic ointment.

The one with the sore wing, same thing, inspect her for wounds.

Let us know how they are.

I went out this morning to feed and give fresh water, and they all flew up onto the roost and were chirping at me! They are all eating and drinking. No more shock. They looked normal today, i will go out again when the light is better to see how the bloodied one is actually doing, and see if i can get a better look. Thanks ! I dont want to frighten them by chasing them around! From now on dogs arr locked in the house when the coop gets opened!
