Chicken attacked by Osprey severely injured

Thanks for the answers, yes she has been sleeping most of the time since rescued. Tried to peck us when we changed wrapping, so still active. One of her eyes is permanently shut also, but eye apparently still exists.

Unsure of which antibiotics, some that were given to us from vet for our dog... again not sure of dosage.
She is getting b-complex water with a syringe to the side of her beak, not directly into her mouth as that could result in filling her lungs... boiled some Marijuana for pain releaf... lol i know, but all i have on hand right now.

Will try to get her to the vet tomorrow, have her looked at, hopefully fixed up! We did clean the wound and pack it with a full tube of 2 antibiotics ointment (couldn't find 3 anti ointment at local store as we live out of town), she seems to be doing ok considering the circumstances. Hopefully she will make the night!
You're doing good!
I didn't realize her eye was affected as well. If you do happen to have a little triple antibiotic ointment left (like plain neosporin) you can put a dab in the eye (first clean/flush the eye with saline). If the eye won't open at the moment, a little can be put on the lid/around the eye to help keep it moistened. Hopefully she just scratched it or got hit, but if you are seeing the vet in the morning that's great.

If you can't see the vet and need help with dosing of medications - let us know. Most common antibiotics we have that information and can help you with it.

I hope she makes it. Some threads people have posted I really didn't think a bird could pull through, but they sure did - so caution is good, but always be hopeful.

Consider penicillin G, can be found at tractor supply in the refrigerated section. I can tell u about needle size needed and dosage tomorrow. Hope all goes well with your girl!!

I live in Canada, we do not have a tractor supply unfortunately.

Woke up just now as I have to head to work (4:47AM) and the chicken seems to be doing alright, still alive.
She seems to have come out of shock and is totally terrified but drank some water when dripped with a syringe. Both of her eyes are open again.
The boiled 'marijuana' 😂 gave her a good night's rest, she totally stopped moving around after from major pain and snoozed it off, until now and seems very perky.

Wife can keep an eye on her today. Will keep you posted once I am back home.

Glad she's doing well, you can find penicillin G at other stores not just tractor supply, let me look...

So the chicken went to the vet today, she said either it was euthanize her or suture her up ( guess they can do it), tho chances are it will cause her alot of stress and possibly death, for $250 CAD ($180 USD roughly). Worth a try!

So we decided to get her sutured up as she was drinking& eating well today, and had alot of perkiness in her, she's a young hen. Should be able to pick her up tomorrow if all goes well! Let's hope so, and once home she will be on the right medications.

Glad you decided to give her a chance and that it went well!!

Thank you, that is really the least we can try to do for her right now, she needs that wound closed up, the vet said she seen her spine at one point, but I know she was moving around just fine, no paralysis.
I believe everything deserves a fair chance to live, even a chicken.

Btw. the bird that attacked her was not an Osprey, it ended up being a Gaws Hawk.

Glad you were able to see the vet!
I hope she heals quickly. Thank you for the update, keep us posted on her progress:)

Thank you for clarifying this! I did find myself wondering if it had been mistaken.

Sorry for your experience.. thank you for doing your best to help her! :hugs

I'm sure the vet will give you something for pain relief.. but it's worth mentioning that IF you're gonna "boil" cannabis for pain relief.. it is fat, glycerin, or alcohol/solvent soluble.. but will not effectively be extracted in water (unless iced), though it may still have some efficacy.. Also standard cannabis will be extracting THC which causes the "high" effect. CBD *more* often alleged to alleviate pain.. is best extracted without the THC from hemp. For informational purposes ONLY.

Many of us use low dose aspirin once we're sure it won't cause even more problems.

Avian pain relief

Hope to see a pic her recovering nicely! :fl
