Good evening,

I'm looking for some help from some experts. My wife is the chicken caretaker and unfortunately this emergency is while she is out of the country. I found blood in the coop and pulled the chicken out. It looks like there is a large egg right ready to be layed but it's been a day and nothing. I've given her some warm soaks and disinfectants but still nothing. The pictures are below (graphic) and I really could use some advice or diagnosis. Thanks a bunch folks!

It looks like she has been pecked by the other chickens. Do you see any maggots on her skin? Keep her separated inside a dog crate with food and water, away from flies. Apply some plain Triple antibiotic ointment or Nustock Cream which is found at many feed stores, twice a day.

I would look over your other chickens‘ vent areas to see if anyone else looks like this. What are you feeding your chickens? Do they get outside to roam around in the yard? Are they overcrowded?

They have a decently sized house and run. My wife usually let's them out for a while during the day. To be completely honest after driving home from work I don't have as much time to let them roam so they could be bored for the past week or so. No maggots, no bugs, I've been cleaning it twice a day and soaking twice a day and she has been in a "hospital crate" by herself every since I found her. Food wise, my wife makes a feed, I think is corn based along with a bunch of other things (I wish I had better details for you) and I feed them sweet potatoes later on in the evening.

Pecking injuries like this can eventually lead to her abdominal wall opening, and her insides coming out. Cannibalism can possibly caused by boredom, overcrowding, too little protein in the diet, too much light inside the coop or nest box, and aggression by some breeds. They need a balanced chicken feed, layer feed or an all flock feed plus crushed oyster shell. It sounds like your are treating her wound well.

I'm ready to ask a stupid question since I'm not exactly chicken versed. In the past few months the chickens have grown a bunch and my guess would be they could use some extra space at night in their coop. Would building a second coop and combing their run be possible?
