I had a hen that acted like a roo. She crowed and had huge spurs. I didn't know she was a she till she laid an egg. The other hen in with her died and I was still getting eggs. Only 1 chicken in the pen so it had to be her. And she laid huge eggs for her size.
When I put her with the other hens she stopped crowing. Her eggs did not have a good shell. It was thin and rough. The egg inside was fine. I had bought her and 2 other hens from an auction. When I got home 1 was sick. She died pretty quick and the other 2 where fine for a while. That's when I discovered I had a roo not another hen. Then the other hen got sick and died after a while of me trying to fix her. I thought it was strange a sick hen was laying an egg every 2 to 3 days. Then when she was just about gone i was till getting eggs up in the nest which she could not get so because she wasn't moving. That's when I started scratching my head in wonder. Then she died and the next day there was an egg.
I've never had it happen before. It was definitely strange. It was my fault I got sick chickens. I should have checked them out better. I'm just glad that had them isolated from the rest so nobody else got sick.Wow that's really interesting! And definitely very strange behavior from that hen. Wonder why she had spurs too? But at least you got nice eggs. Or any eggsstinks you got sick birds though![]()
Well if he crowed and has spurs developing, I'd say those are pretty definitive signs. :/ Plus his comb and wattles look huge for that age. Although they're not very red yet and sometimes girls crow if there's no rooster but that's not that common and he's showing all the signs so I'd say he's most definitely a rooster
