Chicken Breed Focus - Cochin

For LF Cochins, do you put them in a covered pen or can they free-range inside a fence of 5 feet? I want to allow them to roam inside my fence but didn’t know if they would try to fly over. I have always had bantams but I really want to try some LF birds and Cochins are my starting point. Thx.

I am also looking for lavender Cochin chicks if anyone has some for sale.

Any Cochin breeders within 100 miles of NW North Carolina??
I'm within 100 miles of you, but my half-grown Partridge Cochin pair aren't yet old enough to be birthing babies. She'll likely try to brood in the spring, however. I am not a "breeder" usually, but if I know someone wants the babies, I might let the hen brood her eggs. Or give you eggs for an incubator.

Given that I'm a little north of you (meaning both of us live in mountainous areas where only the crows make good time), you may find it simpler to order from mypetchicken.com. But if you'd prefer to see the parents, that kind of thing, and intend to keep them as pets, I'd consider it.

I am very close to you, but my Cochins are Partridge, not lavender. However, I will check around where I live to see if anyone in the local "chicken community" has them. I know a young woman who might well have lavender chicks, but not until early spring.

Cochins are not going to fly. I have large heavy breeds because there are so many hawks where I live (and if you're in Church Hill, I imagine you have them too). And all my chickens are free-range (but locked in their house at night). None of the grown chickens I have fly, and my Cochins didn't attempt it even when they were quite young. This is a very laid-back breed.

These are some of my Cochins! I do have a frizzled boy and some eggs under a broody. I love these bantam birds! They are little angels!
