What is your favorite breed of chicken. And can you give sme general characteristics. I was needing to get more chickens and i was wondering what some people had reviews on for certain breeds of chickens. Thanks for the help!

I love hybrids as they tend to be alot more calm in temperament and are quite prolific in laying eggs, but if i had to pick one breed i would say the orpington, lovely round ladies with a lovely nature and easy to manage. i have a thing about RIR's too i know they are popular and everyone seems to have them but for good reason they are lovely birds!

It depends what you're after in a chicken.

I love my Sebrights. They're tiny, easy to carry and my girl lays very large eggs for her size (pooor thing!). Mine also 'talk' to me; they try to imitate the sounds I make. Obviously, they're not very good at it and can't make any distinguishable words, but I love how they try. My boy is ever so gentle with the girls, not the rapist the other cockerels have turned out to be! They are a rather more delicate breed to keep. My little roo got the sniffles last winter.

I also love my Frieisan girl. She's very clever, but they're a flightly breed. She's constantly stressed out by minor details, like if her best friends disappears to lay an egg... I can't get over what fast learners thay are, though. They lay smaller eggs than I was expecting, so slightly disappointed in that area, but they more than make up for it in personality. Just don't make any sudden movements.

You can find lots of reviews by other BYC-ists here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/products/category/chicken-breeds

By Barred Plymouth Rock is very sweet. Haven't gotten any eggs yet, so can't testify to what kind of producer she is, but her personality is great; curious, gentle, and calm. A great, big pussy cat. I love my Wyandottes, too.

After 64 years of living have had a few breeds except some I currently are just starting out with now.

Have had RIR for years, great breed. Never thought I would place another above them....until I got Buckeyes! In my RIR there was always a bully.....with Buckeyes you can even keep them with bantams. Productions about the same, but they are sweethearts to handle and the best mousers. They eat bugs big time even jumping up to catch then 3 feet into the air. And with that pea comb cold weather hardy. Awesome breed. Not to mention a American breed developed by a woman.
