Hello! We live in E. Tennessee and are considering adding chickens to our farm. We are primarily interested in layers and prefer to avoid roosters. We have two small children and I want to stick with breeds that are known for being friendly. We are thinking about having around a dozen birds. We would like this to be a positive learning experience for them. I've been reading for days it feels like and there is certainly a wealth of knowledge out there. We are trying to get a coop built and would love any input some experienced folks might have about what works best and what you would do differently if you were starting over. Looking forward to reading through the forum and finding some more helpful info!

Welcome! I would you encourage you to look at non hatchery birds like heritage delawares, orpingtons that are people friendly. I've had good experiences with welsummers and our wheaten marans as well. I am partial to these three breeds for friendliness! You are right a wealth of info out here! Happy Easter....!

Hi! Welcome to BYC!!!!!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. My granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) loves our chickens. Breeds that have a well deserved reputation for being calm and gentle with children (potential lap pets) include Australorps, Orpingtons, Brahmas, Cochins, Silkies, Sussex, and Faverolles. If egg production is a priority, Australorps are the best layers on this list. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Whatever breeds you decide to get, good luck with your flock.

So where do you recommend we find "non-hatchery" birds? Thanks for the welcome. Trying to slow my husband down but he is chomping at the bit to get chicks. I prefer to put the coop before the chicken:D
