Chicken coop build 8’ x 20’

We left 3/16” around the frames for expansion and contraction. Please let me know if I need to figure out a solution for this in the winter.

Draft-free means no breeze strong enough to ruffle their feathers. Tiny gaps should be irrelevant except in the most severe climates. :)

I was at Home Depot in my carharts and looked like a hot mess after working in the dirt and heat on the coop. An older couple asked me if I was taking jobs 😂.

💗

That's a real compliment -- you must have looked hardworking and trustworthy. :)

Windows are getting hung! I’m a little concerned about the gap and drafts in the winter. View attachment 3227377We left 3/16” around the frames for expansion and contraction. We haven’t installed the gate latches that will hold the windows flush. We should get all windows and the door hung today. And we should get the HDPE installed in the coop.

Couple of funny stories…Two cyclers went by today while we were working early this AM and we heard them say it looks like we’re building a spec house 😂

We just built a house and paid a fortune in dirt work elevating our foundation due to flooding concerns. DH borrowed it from the owner of the company. We've become friendly with the family. DH has backhoe envy too!

Forgot to mention that we made sure to sandwich the hardware cloth between 2x4s and 2x2s on the inside except at the top.

Ditto Dat^^^

What's your winter weather like there @Becks Chicks ....high and low temps, winds, snow?

I'm about 30 minutes from Portland. We probably get snow once or twice a year. It doesn't stick around for long. Most of the time in the winter we are above freezing.

As far as wind goes, we live on the river. The wind blows pretty good sometimes from east to west or vice versa. If it blows from east to west, the trees will buffer the wind. If it blows from west to east, the long side of the coop facing our home will take the wind. Landscaping with trees in that area is our next project, but those won't be big enough for a few years to do much.

Sounds like you've really thought about your coop placement.

Thank you. We have tried to think about everything, and are relying on the BYC community to set us straight if we've missed something. We've had so many family members try and dissuade us from chickens due to predators and pests. I grew up with chickens and we didn't have an adequate set up and were constantly battling sickness and predators. We would have to cull so many chickens every year. Looking back, I can't believe no one ever tried to make a better space. We are doing our best to make it a safe and healthy coop.

I don't think you're going to need to worry about a few gaps around the windows.
