Chicken coop build 8’ x 20’

Pics
We got the primer on the coop today. The bright white is a bit shocking and I’m glad we are going with a darker gray than I initially chose. Tomorrow, we’ll paint using Sherwin Williams mindful gray. 5E37DA04-D667-4D37-B685-B6AC04DA91CE.jpeg 31F6E2E4-3ABF-4D5D-B23C-0BD05E9A99E3.jpeg

My mind is boggled at how you guys have all this energy.
I just told my mom about your build and how you work on it after your workday.
She said, "Reading that would make anyone tired." and I responded
"Yeah, they're like a different species or something."

When we're building, we get through one task a day and only on our quiet days, lol.

We have different days off and the only time we can work on it together is after work. And honestly, our work lives are very stressful so it’s a good release to do physical work that’s not mentally taxing at the end of the day.

We should finish up in another week. Although I say that never having installed a metal roof so hopefully that’s not an ordeal.

Metal roof is remarkably easy to deal with given the right tools. Here is the part of my build thread where the guys were doing the roof:

Thank you. We don’t have a fence stapler that I know of. I think we have a pneumatic nailer though. I’ll have to see if it can shoot staples. If not, I can buy one. We use a lot of a staples at our business when we build drying racks for the paint booth. The guys use a hand stapler. I’m sure they’d be thrilled with a power stapler.

Paint got finished. Not sure I’m in love with the color (SW Mindful Gray). I’m hoping with the roof and the rest of everything to be installed that it will come together. My husband will not be painting it again 😂. I’ll put mulch around the outside and probably add some ferns and other plants. Landscaping is our next big project to tackle.

We’ll pick up the clear acrylic and HDPE on Wednesday. The metal roof arrives on Thursday. The inaugural chicken release is scheduled for Saturday.

It’s really hard to photograph the hardware cloth because it disappears. We got it all attached. I find the fender washers visually busy but I know they are needed anywhere that won’t be sandwiched with a 2x4.

Picking up the clear polycarbonate and the HDPE today. I’m not sure how much time we’ll have left to work after that. Probably tomorrow we’ll install the HDPE and polycarbonate and hang all the doors and windows. Then, we’ll add the 2x4s on the sides of the hardware cloth. 885EA21B-385B-44BE-9DB1-DEA1B96F6B6A.jpeg 19344312-264D-49FD-B476-49C04D9BB115.jpeg 38A2D389-BC2D-4EB5-B033-86FC039CBCAB.jpeg We’re getting there!

Windows are getting hung! I’m a little concerned about the gap and drafts in the winter. 463C60DB-217B-4C6A-A221-79F9B8248BFD.jpeg We left 3/16” around the frames for expansion and contraction. Please let me know if I need to figure out a solution for this in the winter. The roosts are at window height for ventilation in summer.

We haven’t installed the gate latches that will hold the windows flush. We should get all windows and the door hung today. And we should get the HDPE installed in the coop.

Couple of funny stories…Two cyclers went by today while we were working early this AM and we heard them say it looks like we’re building a spec house 😂

I was at Home Depot in my carharts and looked like a hot mess after working in the dirt and heat on the coop. An older couple asked me if I was taking jobs 😂.
