Chicken coop build 8’ x 20’

Pics
We're 30 minutes from Portland and may get snow once or twice a winter. It doesn't stay long and the pitch of the metal roof will be 6/12.

When I google, I see 1 square foot of ventilation per 10 sqft of coop is necessary. On this site, I see 1 sqft per bird. Coop is 68 square feet. With just the soffits and ridge vent, we have 7.8 square feet.

I'm going to run out to the coop and double check my measurements. We can vent on the tops of the gable ends if we need to.

Snow might not be a huge issue in your area, but I figured I'd mention it. I'd add a large vent in the inside gable as the roof would shield the vent from driving rain.

The other option is to remove the blocks on the gable ends. That will give me another 8(1.75"X26") = 2.52sqft of added ventilation. That will take me to 10.3 sqft. of total ventilation. My husband might flog me if I ask, though.

We can definitely add venting to upper triangle peaks of the gable ends.

I'll have to search BYC to see if there's a way to hardware cloth the small openings if we remove the gable soffit blocks. Not sure how that would work with the metal roof since we can't screw into it.

Ya, the profile of the metal roofing makes it tuff. The gable ends would be much easier.

Having more than enough ventilation is better than just squeaking by..

Got a pic?
Gables aren't normally called soffits.

Haha. I knew it wasn't the right terminology.

I’m at work so can’t get a picture of my coop. Here’s a picture and I’ve circled the area that represents the blocking in between the Purlins that I’m talking about. We could knock that out on the coop walls. It’s only 1.75” so wouldn’t give us much ventilation.

Your kinda right. The underside of the roof overhang is called the soffit. Just to the right of your circle would be a fantastic place to add a couple sqft of ventilation.
