Chicken coop build 8’ x 20’

Got a little more work done today. It was over 100 degrees and we couldn’t get started until 3:30pm. The heat really sucks it out of you. We got the run walls up. It’s starting to look like a chicken coop We are adding a Dutch door to the end. We also decided to do some small solid panels on the western side of the run to give the chickens some shade in the summer.

We’ll finish the framing of the door tomorrow after a run to Home Depot.

[Finally chickens!]

Hi Neighbor! Yes, foundation is pressure treated wood and we’ve already gone through a box of 2.5” deck screws. The run will be covered for the rain.

It looks like it's too late now but we specifically use "ground contact" treated wood and stainless steel everything now. But we are right on the ocean and the combination of rain and salt is really hard on wood and metal. Your setup looks fabulous ..... enjoy your birds ..... i sure do!

The foundation is definitely pressure treated for ground. It‘s darker and has the lines. I could see where you’d need it all over for the ocean. The main floor of our house is constructed with it for flooding concerns and the upper level (above 100 year flood level) has regular lumber. We’ll make sure and prime and paint everything on the coop. That will help protect the wood.

I‘m sure it’s cooler on the ocean. That sounds pretty glorious right now. The hot weather should break for us tomorrow.

Might I suggest a solid roof on your run to protect from avian flus, especially since you are so close to water and water fowl whom are the biggest carriers of it. Would hate for ya to go to all this work then your flock get sick and have to be destroyed when a simple roof would of helped.

Otherwise I love what you are doing thus far. I am planning a new coop myself.....went from 1 old rescued hen to 1 old hen and 3 EE pullets this year so my small cabinet coop doesn't quite work now.

Yes, we’ll have a solid roof over the coop and run. Our chickens won’t be allowed to free range since we have so many wild fowl on our beach and property. It’s too risky. I actually found and joined BYC when I was researching avian flu and came across a WA thread on it What a great site.

Yesterday, we finished one of the nest boxes. The width is 36” and the depth is 12”. The height is 16” at the lowest point, I believe. We also cut the joists for the floor and started cutting plywood for the coop panels.


Now that we have a nest box model, the next one will go quicker. I picked up paint today. We went with repose gray for both interior and exterior. It’s a lighter color of our house. I wanted to stain, but the upkeep is too much for what we’re willing to do.

This week, we’ll try and get all the framing finished including the roof. Then it’s on to paint . I’m hoping to have this project finished in 2 weeks.

We cut the rafters and temporarily set the ridge beam. The picture doesn’t show it, but we got the first set of rafters hung last night



My husband insisted on a 6/12 pitch with a 12” overhang. I think a 5/12 pitch would have looked better with our house, which has a 4/12 roof on a PNW modern style house.

He said he didn’t care about the paint color so I picked a color a bit lighter than our house color. Now he’s telling me it’s too light. We have an interior designer friend that tends to act as a neutral tie breaker for us so I reached out to her on the color. That’s so over the top for a chicken coop but we just can’t agree.
