I have no experience with this whatsoever, but I will try to offer some ideas....
If you have a small number of chickens, maybe you could put them in a box and perhaps cover it with a towel like a parakeet in a birdcage.
If you have a large number of them and they are tipplers, maybe you could spike their water.
If they have some kind of comfort object, like a blanket of teddy bear, maybe you could put it nearby.
If they are tired but uncomfortable, maybe you could provide a cozy place for them to snooze.

I'm sure she was kidding with the suggestion you drug your chickens.
Just make them a "new coop" area and they will figure it out. I find they are very resilliant creatures. Keep that coop area tigh so they can create their own body heat, cuddling with eachother and thus comforting eachother.
I would also reccomend you NOT keep them in the house but in the garage. It would be too warm for them in the house and might shock them physically.
