Chicken coop

These days you can get them just about anywhere. If you have a source of pallets, you could even use those to make your own.

What is your budget?

With only $1,000 - does that include the run? Or just the coop?

Not only pallets but Cattle Panels (CP) work well for coops and runs. They are relatively easy to build with, in many different styles (well, all hooped, but...). A lot of building ability for the cost. A "coop" can be tractored or in a permanent position. It is expandable. 8x8 (2 CP) will house 10 chickens (w/ room to add a few more) in the coop section and you can add a run as well. Here in NC, the CP have gone up to $22/each at TSC. Other feed stores here charge a lot more (probably a volume order/sale issue).

Where are you building at? To better help you with suggestions, we need to know what part of the country you are in and what type of weather you get. When Aart checks in - she has a handy dandy explanation of how to do the addition to your avatar area, with pictures... You can also put info in your signature block.
