Hi all,

Our 7 month old Jersey Giant pullet is coughing repeatedly (every 5-10 seconds). We had noticed sneezing a few weeks ago but it had subsided, but now today she is coughing.

Anyone know what is wrong? What can we do? She seems mostly normal otherwise (eating, drinking, laid an egg today)

Thank you,
Gordon

I would wait for a day or two more and see if the coughing subsides. The action she is doing is very comparable to a hen that inhaled feed dust, seeds, or other matter into her airways. Sometimes for complete resolution, it may take a few days.

If it continues, or she develops other symptoms, the problem could be due to a respiratory disease such as infectious bronchitis, or mycoplasma. IB generally resolves itself, MG stays with the bird, and may require antibiotics to lessen/not treat the severity.

Always strive for a clean, ammonia, mold-free coop, with plenty of ventilation, Crumbly feeds often contain powder which can exacerbate coughing/sneezing, so if you are feeding crumbles, you may switch to pellets.

If it helps anyone else, we took her out and massaged her crop for a few minutes. It seems to have helped and she isn't coughing anymore. Thanks all!
