Prior to a few days ago, I had a 4 year old beautiful white Plymouth Rock / Wyandotte mix hen "Shanequa" who just passed away. About a year ago I adopted an 8 month old black hen "Jenni" (pardon the fact I don't know the breed). While they got off to a rocky start, the've became great friends.

Noticed something odd with Jenni. Every time I approach her, she shrieks / cries and her features poof up. I wonder if she's crying/mourning the loss of Shanequa? Check out a short YouTube video I made this morning, letting her out of her coop:

I believe she is getting ready to go broody. Get some fertile eggs and increase your flock if that proves to be the case. Yes, I am an enabler.

Hmm, good point. Neither have been broody before so I've never noted how they "act" when they are.

I have been contemplating getting another baby chick...still mourning over the loss of the other hen. She really was a great bird.
