I had a hen named crown. She layed almost everyday except when she was molting. she stayed in a coop with annora the turkey, fancy, peep, happy, and poppy, the other hens. she also roosted with a rooster. they all got along fine until one day i opened up their coop to let them out in the morning and crown was dead. she was by her water on her side. her neck wasnt broken and there were no wounds. the other chickens and turkey were all fine. does anyone no why she would have died like that? she had eaten the night before and acted normally. she had no sickly symtoms like fatigue, runny nose, diharrea, ect. i have no clue what could have happened. also we know she didnt have an internal egg blockage. can anyone help?

There's no telling what she died from unless a necropsy is performed. Normally there are 3 basic issues to start with regarding an unexplained death of a chicken, or a combination of these; lice/mites, eggbound, or worms.

We just had one Road Island Red die unexpectedly as well. Similar event where all 9 seemed fine and this morning I opened the coop up and she was just lying there dead while all the other 8 were fine. A bunch of ants were already on her and my only observation is this means she died several hours before I opened the coop up.

It has been very hot lately although I've heard RIR are supposed to take heat pretty well. However, how much heat is too much?

As a precaution we have a fan blowing air underneath the coop where the chickens huddle when it gets really hot out.

So was heat to blame, or if heat was to blame, would all the chickens be dead? As I said before, all the other seem fine.

Sorry to hear you lost one as well. I don't mean to derail the thread, but only offer heat as a suggestion for cause of death?
