My chicken died suddenly after convulsing and vomiting bile. This happened immediately after a warm epsom salt bath. I had thought she was egg bound as she had not had any eggs for several days. After doing some more research, I did notice this morning that she may have had a swollen crop. Could she have drank too much water and choked? I’m so confused! She declined so quickly

I am so sorry you lost her. It's hard to say what she passed on from, you would need to do an exam or send her in for a necropsy. It's very common at death for birds to expel the contents of the crop, however from your description of the bile color, she was no doubt impacted somewhere in her intestines not allowing her crop to empty for quite sometime. Many internal ailments can cause the crop not empty properly.

Unfortunately the whole give a chicken a bath thing can be deadly. One should NEVER bath a sick chicken.

Crop issues are usually a sign/symptom that something else is seriously wrong. Depending on her age and what you have been feeding her it could have been any number of things.

If you still have this bird or should you lose another you can get a necropsy for a real answer as to why they die.

What state are you in?


How old was the bird and what EXACTLY do you feed you flock on a daily basis?

I agree with @TwoCrows that she likely had an impaction somewhere along her digestive system or reproductive tumors. Either of which can cause the crop to back up and not function properly. If it's any consolation, there was more than likely nothing you would have been able to do to help her. Many people try but most people fail.

We got her back in March and she ate layer feed, worms and fruit and vegetables scraps.
