Chicken digestive problems

I recently went through a very similar thing with my EE. The vet listened for gizzard sounds,( none present) that was how she was diagnosed. My girl had a lot of grit in her crop, and not much else, so that wasn't it. The vet ( one of the top avian hospitals in the state) thought it likely started because of internal laying. They gave her fluids and pain meds and sent her home with an anti-inflammatory( Rimadyl, 25mgs 1/2 tab 2 x day). She started eating again as soon as she got pain meds. Maybe you can mix a baby aspirin in some yogurt? I learned you can also shove a pill down their throat.

That’s interesting to read. They mentioned as a breed that regularly lays eggs that’s part of the reason her gut has stopped working and obviously her age may play a part although were j aware of her age as she was dumped as an adult.
I’ll look into it and see what I can do, thanks for your help

What about something like plain greek yogurt? It would offer some different things nutritionally than the rice and oats.

I read they struggle to digest dairy so haven’t given her yogurt since. She does like it but was concerned about giving it her I case she struggles to digest it? She’s been having a range of other foods not just rice and oats but wanted to know of more too.
Would she be okay digesting the Greek yogurt?
Thanks

My hens love Greek yogurt.
Plain no fat Fage brand is their favorite I swear.
They don’t seem to care for “runny” brands.
They also love moistened feed.

I put about a big tablespoon on top of it a few days a week.
So that amount is roughly divided between 4 hens.

I also have read chickens have a hard time digesting dairy. The reasoning behind this is a chicken isn’t an animal that is raised on Mother’s milk and their bodies are not set up to digest dairy. I see a lot of people including experts who use yogurt...but maybe not for this hen with the compromised gut (?)
Did the vet recommend probiotics? Sorry if I missed it in the thread.
Very interesting thread. Thanks for sharing...
Edited to add: I see henpenjem did recommend probiotics.
