Chicken disappearing throughout the day?

The eggs she sits on don't have to be hers. A broody hen will sit on any clutch she can. I have one hen that triggers into broodiness any time there are a decent number of eggs in a single nest- if we let a nest's eggs go ungathered for a day, she'll be sitting in it by sundown and screeching at anyone who approaches.
I have two like that.

Silkies. Of course.

If her feathers fluff up she is broody you don't need a rooster, iv had leghorns and isa browns go broody breeds ppl say do not go broody much at all... I also suspect through witnessing this that you can at least sometimes make a hen broody by locking/putting them in closely with another broody hen it works through bio resonance.
