Hey everyone, I recently noticed my chicken doing a weird gasping or panting thing at night while she's sleeping, and I'm a bit concerned about it. I have a camera installed in the coop to check the doors and saw her doing it a couple of nights ago, and now I'm seeing it again.

What's strange is that she only displays this behavior while sleeping, and when she's awake, she's active, eats food, drinks water, and lays an egg every day. She was even out free-ranging for about four hours today and didn't do it once. I have observed that when I call her name, she wakes up and stops doing it.

Has anyone ever seen this before? I'm on the east coast, and the temperature has been between 50-75 degrees Fahrenheit when this happened. She's a one-year-old Dark Brahma, and the closest vet that accepts chickens is about 2 and a half hours away from me. Free range wise she’s out about 2-4 hours a day, free range consists of a yard and some weeds behind it, a big mulch pile, also the free range area contains a very large flock of sparrows who tend to follow the chickens around.

I'm a bit worried about her but also wondering if she’s just a weird sleeper, any advice or information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

That's what you get for playing peeping tom on your birds at night.🤣
No offense, but this is the third thread about this issue, if she's acting OK other than this, I'd chalk it up to something similar to sleep apnea or something.

Haha I know! It’s just strange and I’m wondering if I should be doing something or if there’s any suggestions to ruling other things out such as gapeworm

You reported on one of the other threads that she was doing fine.

If it were Gapeworm, she would be gasping all the time 24/7, not eating/drinking and would be in a state of decline.

I had reported earlier that my chicken was doing fine as the strange behavior had stopped for a couple of nights. However, I wanted to post an update as the behavior has reappeared. This is why I am posting again with updated information to let you all know that it has happened a second time. And the corn was not the issue as that is now in a metal can.

What I find strange is that this time, there was no corn given at night, which was previously suspected as a possible cause. Despite this, the behavior has returned, and I'm still unsure of what might be causing it.

Hey all just wanted to add a follow up. Last night one of my other chickens started doing the same behavior. I went out this morning and let them out and saw worms in their poop. I’ll be treating them with safeguard.
