When I gathered my eggs, should I wash them before I put them in the carton or put them in the carton and wash them as I get my eggs to cook?

I suggest not washing them. Eggs come with a natural film on the shell called bloom that is designed to keep out bacteria. Unless they're covered in poop, I wouldn't wash. But it's your decision.

once the egg hits the nest, it is covered with all sorts of bacteria and germs.
when you crack an egg unwashed, you can drive that mess into the egg.
I will continue washing mine.
Bloom is over rated IMHO.
I washed thousands of eggs prior to incubating them without any adverse results.

I have been washing mine as I get ready to use them. I was told the film protect them and keep longer. I just wanted some advice? If that was okay to do

That's fine as long as you don't mind washing them. It's easier for me not to, but it's perfectly fine to wash them as well.
