They don't mind the zip tie on their leg?
JT

For the past 8 years I have introduced 2 to 4 point of lay hybrids into the flock.

They all look the same to me…

To identify their age, I loosely zip colored ties on their legs. A different color each year on the right leg. If I run out of colors, I will start over using the left leg. Tight enough that they won’t fall off, but loose enough that there will never be a circulation issue.

The girls do not ever seem to mind or even notice their pretty little ankle bracelets… I use the very small zip ties.

Mini zip ties. Never had an issue, the birds don't mind. I have about 12 birds right now that are banded because they're breeding stock and correct records are important.

I keep the bands loose enough to slide freely, but tight enough to not get caught. I free range and I have never had issues.

well i like the nail polish idea.. i had a couple girls last year that was hard to tell apart.. i would go by their personalities.. but those change too.. :)
thanks for the ideas.. :celebrate

You nail painters don't know the trick to getting it to stay on, you use danipro polish it stays on for months! The upside is its antifungal, the downside colors are limited so if you're hoping for rainbow toes you're out of luck. :)

Out of our four, one has very short earlobes. Of course she is also the biggest and lightest coloured. One looks like her, but smaller, and the other two look very similar.... The zip tie idea is looking good :)

Zip ties on an eighty five day old chicken is not a good idea. The birds still have some growing to do and as the birds mature the zip ties on their legs can become so tight that circulation in the chickens' feet is cut off resulting in the birds losing a foot.

Yeahhhh .... ya gotta change them out a couple times between hatch and about 6 months. Not a problem with a couple dozen birds.
