Chicken feed in SF Bay Area?

I wound up going both to Mike's Feed in San Leandro and Concord Feed in Pleasant Hill this weekend. They both seem like fine shops, but I'll definitely be going back to Concord Feed next time. They seem pretty chicken-oriented and had a bunch of feed choices, including Start & Grow which was what I wanted. They also sell baby chicks and had a lot of young kids milling around asking questions about raising chicks, which they answered happily and (as far as I know) correctly. Mike's had pretty much one choice for chicken feed -- nothing specific to baby chicks at all.

Also, Animal Farm in Berkeley told me they didn't have baby chick feed. I can't remember if they had nothing for chickens at all, or just nothing specific to chicks, but she sounded pretty clear that chickens weren't their business.

Hope this helps.

Mike's is good, Concord Feed in Pleasant Hill is good, but Lucky Dog Pet Supply on San Pablo at Allston has always had feed when we need it. They also usually have a range of chicks/pullets as well.

I have to admit that I didn't believe you about Lucky Dog on San Pablo... How could a store FOUR BLOCKS FROM MY HOUSE be selling feed and chicks when I have been driving over an hour each way to other stores?

Well, you are correct. Not only do they have feed, they have organic feed and chick feed. And yes, they have pullets for cheap ($11 each for 3-4 month olds). I have to admit that I felt pretty sad looking at their chickens, because they have a LOT crammed into a very small space and they look a bit mangy. I know most chickens in the world live like this, but I really had to hold back from taking all of them home. Their other small animals are also not kept under the best of conditions, at least not from the looks of it yesterday.

Regardless, thanks for the heads up on this place and their feed!

i work for a biodiesel station/urban farming store in berkeley that sells organic chicken feed from modesto milling (layer pellets). the feed has kelp meal and essential oil of oregano--the chickens love it!
as far as i know, we are the only place in the east bay that sells modesto milling feed! we're the biofuel oasis, at 2465 4th street, corner of 4th and dwight.
in a few months we'll be teaching classes about keeping chickens and turkeys as well.

That's totally rad. I drive an '82 Mercedes 240D and just got 10 chickens.

I guess I'm your target market, eh? Hahah. I'll be down for feed when I run out! How much is it?

I just went to BioFuel Oasis in Berkeley. http://www.biofueloasis.com/wp/
It's
so close to me and I never knew about it until reading in this post!

They have nice organic layer pellets and chick/growout feed in 50# bags for $35 and $38 respectively, and 50# bags of organic scratch (which also has some nutritional stuff mixed in). Nice folks. They will be moving to the corner of Ashby and Sacramento soon and it sounds like they'll be adding to what they sell with the much bigger space and are open to suggestions.

I also really like the feed store in Alamo - it's an old-fashioned place that you can still drive right on through and have them throw whatever you buy into your trunk and then pay at the window without even having to get out. They also seem to always have chicks and are willing to order particular breeds if you ask.

The folks at Lucky Dog are nice but they sold scratch to two people I know who were asking for grow-out so...

I know this is a bit far from Berkeley but I go to Sam's Feed Store in San Jose. The chick organic feed is $22 for 50lb bag. They also sell layer pellet/crumbles at about $12.50 for 50lb. I was just there on Sat and bought chicken grower/finisher for $15.50 for 50lb.

Hi all,

I hope it is ok to revive this topic for 2009. Does anyone have any new suggestions for someone in San Francisco? We got our chicks from Half Moon Bay and I don't want to drive all the way back out there for chicken feed.

We got 10 lbs. of chick starter for 4 chicks -- and I don't believe its going to last long. Seems like they've gone through a couple of pounds already in less than a week.

The chicks are still young but I plan on switching them to grower formula at 6-8 weeks. We will be letting them forage out in the yard as supplement. (Is this ok?)

Finally, how much does feed cost? We paid $6.50 for the 10 lbs of chick starter.
