you do not have to.(free range scenario) if you had a chicken that would probably get lost, whether you clip her wings or not she will get lost. have you ever heard the expression 'chickens always come home to roost.' it's true.generally they don't get lost (i think. can some one confirm this for me?).any way... if your chicken got lost and it's wings were not clipped, it would probably would have a better chance of survival(if it's instincts have not been lost too...)because it can fly up into a tree and roost in relative safety (from ground dwellers like dogs anyway.). i have no caged chickens so i do not know a caged (or fenced run) scenario.

I totally agree! They were given wings for a reason. I would, in my area anyway, not clip them for that reason. They need to get out of the way of anything coming after them. I am in the woods here and am sure that hungry critters lurk. I have let my chickens live naturally, as best I can. They are not locked inside at night. They go inside and roost, but the window is open. If something happens to get in, they have an escape route. They fly and that gives me some peace of mind. Sumatras are not like the typical chicken, (I have other breeds). They're survivors! they rock!

I agree, my birds are all free range during the day, but all, including the guineas come back at dusk to the safety of the coop, but as I also have fatty's (Orps) I lock up at night...
