I am a big believer in having a well-constructed coop. I have killed many snakes around my house, mostly venomous ones. The snake in the photo is non-venomous. The secret is to be sure there is no opening large enough for a snake. Hardware cloth has 1/2" openings and I've never had a snake inside, although I have seen one trying to get in after my baby chicks. Another thing that works very well is the black bird netting for trapping snakes. I have had this happen more than once. I just had some of the netting laying on the ground near the coop and snakes tried to go through it and got caught.
Hens go broody when you don’t want them to… and won’t go broody when you do.
