Im confused, I thought broody is when you won't get off the nesting box
 
yes, but some broodies walk around for a bit till they really sit, its the puffing and growling that let you know. most people don't see that till the birds actually starts to sit, if your hen has never been broody before it takes a bit for it to kick in

This will be her first time going broody

I heard that you can put a clutch of ice cubes under them to break them up?
 
The dog crate is pretty large with not many places to nest, I think she'll be fine
