We live in a suburban neighborhood, have 2 backyard chickens that have a coop and run. We allow them free access to the rest of backyard most of the day. One chicken has been able to get over a four foot fence into our vegetable garden. Any suggestions on how to stop this? A taller fence? Or other vegetable garden protection options please

Taller fence would be your only option after not letting them free range unfortunately. They see what they want and they will fly to get it. My chickens have flown over a 6 foot fence before.

Put something floppy at the top of the fence, such as extending the height a bit with some snow fencing... something that'll be hard for them to land on top of. Many times when chickens go over a fence they'll try to land and then finish by launching off the top.

I've also used bird netting across the top successfully. I had raised veggie beds surrounded with 3' tall chicken wire, and zip tied light bird netting across the top. The chickens didn't like bouncing off the netting and stopped going into the beds.

Get heavier birds that can't fly. Jk. Sort of.😉
Clip their wings.
Fence addition.
Stop free ranging.
Run a wire about 1ft above fence with some surveyor's tape or other material streaming off of it. They may perceive the streamers as a barrier too high to pass and stop trying to go over. After a few months, try removing the wire to see if they have given up for good.

I can't see anything more useful than a taller fence. the only thing that i can see more effective, is a roof.
