Chicken growth

I'm getting some 6 week old female orpingtons at the end of April..guess it will be awhile for egg! Lol

You're looking at early fall for eggs, maybe late summer if you're lucky. Orps aren't the fastest to mature so laying onset is usually a bit slower compared to something like production hybrids.

When is a chick considered a chicken and at what age do they start laying?

Chicks are chickens. Once I know sexes, I call them pullets and cockerels and then either at 6 months or a year (I can't remember which) pullets turn to hens and cockerels turn into cocks.
