Chicken has a Dirty Butt

My Barred Rock Oreo, has poop all over her butt and I wanted to know what I could do to clean it off without hurting her. I hate having to hurt her so does anyone know what to do for this?

This happens frequently in some hens, and can be a result of them having loose poops. Try to pull off any dried poop with your fingers, and you can trim excess dirty feathers. If a butt bath is needed, try soap and warm water, and try not to get her wet all over. Leave her inside in a cage or dog crate until she has fully dried. Look over the vent area when she is clean and dry for any redness or wounds.

I have a few hens who have loose poops and their butts are always dirty. I do back them up to a basin of warm water and wash the butts about twice a month.

Feeding these hens yogurt occasionally and using ACV in the water can help this condition. But some just don't have a strong enough "squirt" so the poop ends up on the feathers instead of the ground.

Thanks so much guys! I will try to just trim her feathers and remove some poop by hand. If it doesn't work, I'll try giving her a butt bath. Thanks again!

I have seven hens. All but one have clean butts, but one, a Wheaten Ameracauna, has a dirty butt. She's a light blonde, so it really shows. Her twin has a perfect fluffy butt.

Her behavior is excellent. She is eating, laying and running around. Don't know why she is different in this way. All the girls get exactly the same diet.

I tried cleaning it, but it is like glue. I soaked her tuche in warm soapy water, but it really didn't do much. Wondering if I need to just cut that part off? Will her feathers grow back OK.

I actually have a handful of blue wheaten ameraucanas, and a couple seem to keep poopy butts. I break off any solid poop, and trim excess butt feathers. In warm weather they may get a good soapy butt bath. Look her ocer for lice and mites around her vent, or white clumps of lice eggs. A tsp of plain yogurt daily in her food might help her diarrhea. You could take in a few samples of droppings for a fecal float to look for worms and cocci.

I have eight bantams hens and they have been tested for both worms and no significant numbers were found and said no treatment is needed. One hen (Ginger) consistently had a dirty bum and she has passed away just before Easter. The other hen (Saucey) started just recently and has had her bum cleaned several times but it always comes back. I have sent the worm report to the vets and am currently waiting on any suggestions that they might have! It seems to me from reading posts on here that there doesn't seem to be any definitive reason why dirty bums happen! Do you single out the dirty bum hen and feed her with yoghurt or just give it to all! I have recently sent for live worms to give them more protein in their diet, I am desparate and do not want to loose another hen.
