My eleven year old chicken is having a hard time eating. She is hungry and wants to eat but squawks loudly and jolts away from food after taking a bite, as if it is attacking her. Has anyone experienced this? There is only one vet sort of far from me who charges $295 just to see her. I don't know what to do. I've tried all kinds of soft or crushed food and she acts the same. I did get Poultry Cell that I'm syringing to her. I've uploaded a video. Because of so many tries (on her part), she now seems afraid to eat.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow

Definitely open her mouth to see what's going on inside. Birds her age are susceptible to cancers, especially Squamous Cell Carcinoma. It causes tumors to grow in the mouth, esophagus, and crop, sometimes the face. The tumors grow large enough to prevent the bird from swallowing food, even water eventually. Let us know if you see anything unusual in her mouth, it should be a nice light pink, smooth, no bumps, lumps, black or yellow chunky masses.

Hello and Welcome to BYC. So Glad that you have joined this community of poultry lovers. Have you tried raw eggs whipped up that are cold? Room Temp? Yogurt? Room temp mashed potatoes? Consume soup that is of different temps?
None of those but I will try. I have tried cold scrambled and sunny side up eggs, pumpkin puree, pureed peas, and wet crumbles. Any idea on what would make her mouth hurt to eat? I looked inside and see no lesions or growths. We are currently battling lice with ACV baths, DE, and Poultry Protector.

The combination of flavor and temp may be the key to getting her to eat if there are no lesions present and no infection in the throat. I remember having strep throat and even cool water was painful to get down. It's not good to give an antibiotic if an infection is not known. I'm not sure of what to give if she is in pain either.

Hello and thank you. I've looked in her mouth and see no lesions or growths. The back of her throat may be a dark color but it also might be shadow or natural coloring? She is a Welsumer, so has dark colors. I just looked again and the tip of her tongue is black but it does look like natural coloring.
