hi all,
This is my second incubation experience. Im currently on day 22 and i have 8 very healthy happy chicks, one had pipped and zipped half the way and then i found it this morning dead in its shell :( and then i have lucy, shes my chick with the problem;

yes i know theres a thousand threads on here already in regard to this same topic however after reading through them all im not convinced that they are the same thing as the problem my little chick is having.
She was born yesterday morning so is now over twenty four hours old and she has got what i first thought was an unabsorbed yolk (no i never helped her, she hatched all the way out on her own), however on closer inspection it has a bit of yolk there as well as like a red bubble (looks like a small intestine like tube) with what i imagine would be some type of fluid in it, hanging out of its bottom and is actually still attached to the shell. This made me think however that perhaps it was the umbilical cord? (given it is attached properly to the egg shell with a thick cord looking thing). There was quite a bit of blood on the peice of shell and on the cord like bit where it joins together, and it has gone quite dark red/black now which concerns me (but perhaps it kinda dies off before it falls off??). The chicken seems perhaps a bit thin, and she still hasnt fluffed up much at all but she seems to be in good spirits, she cheeps away and moves about the box quite well like any of the other healthy chicks did at birth...

So anybody have any thoughts or ideas?? I dont want to cull it if it isnt necessary. Its such a stressful time!!!

thanks
mel

I should also add that there was originally 48 eggs which i candled at day 7 and removed 16 of those eggs (which i bought some of, used some of my own and some from a friend so they r all different stock). Then at day 14 i candled them and took a few more out that had quit with blood rings etc. and now this is still about ten eggs in the incubator that havent hatched yet and there was definately live chicks inside when candled at day 14 so Do you think its worth waiting another day or so??

thanks again mel

so what happened to that chick with red bubble? (my friend's chick might have the same problem)
