Chicken-hater trying to kill my buzz! (Auburn, AL)

Quote:
Every person who has REALLY been negative about chickens to me has been someone who does not have pets at all. "Cats are filthy and smell up the house." "Dogs lick their butts and pee on everything." Just a bunch of people who don't know how to keep a clean litter box, deal with housebreaking dogs, and probably wear rubber gloves to bed when...... well, not going there, this being a family forum and all.

I love this thread. I've wanted chickens since I was 7 years old. I finally bought my own home about 10 years ago and started thinking it a possibility to actually have a few two years ago. When I started talking about it, all the "chicken haters" were "trying to kill my buzz." People told me I was crazy. My 12 year old was adamant he didn't want chickens in "his" backyard - he stated he hated chickens, and would never be happy about having them, and made sure I knew he wanted nothing to do with them... I was told by various people (some with chicken experience, some without) that chickens are smelly, filthy, loud, high maintenance. I live in a residential neighborhood...my family told me the neighbors would be mad, etc.

On my 43rd birthday this past may, I told myself I have this one life to live, and maybe God won't let me keep chickens in heaven, so if I wanted to ever have chickens, I better get moving on it. I figured that if chicken-keeping turned out to be as much a hassle as I was being warned, then I would just not keep chickens anymore. The only thing holding me back was the money to buy or build a coop. I finally lucked out this spring by finding a HUGE rabbit hutch that I've converted into a nice little coop for my four bantams. They don't smell, they aren't filthy, loud or high maintenance. My neighbors couldn't care less, as everyone respects their privacy and property-owners' rights. (Especially the neighbor with the beagle who barks and howls day and night from his back yard - what's he going to say, really?).

And the sweetest thing of all? My 12 year old is IN LOVE with his "girls." He helped me name them and is so protective of them, and so proud of having chickens in his back yard!

I am trying to get the covenants changed in our subdivision to allow chickens. Shouldn't be too hard since I am president of the association, right?

I brought it up in the officers meeting that I wanted to add an adgenda topic for changing the covenants to allow chickens and one of the neighbors (also on the board) said "Chickens, why would you want chickens. Who would ever want to have chickens. They are smelly and dirty." Turns out she lived on a farm, and it was her job to pick eggs and clean the coop for over 100 chickens!

As a side note, she did offer to take any extra eggs that I get!

x2! You might consider starting an "Underground Chicken Club" and sell T-shirts, caps and other paraphernalia.

Of all the ignorant bliss, laws against chickens. Wow, Auburn must be a really safe place to live, what with no outlaw chickens roaming the streets. Nothing worse than being mugged and having to admit to the cops, "It was a gang of chickens, honest! Why the leader had spurs at least two inches long!" Such crime must be irradicated at all costs......

I'M WITH YOU ANIMALS SHOULD BE ALLOWED ANYWHERE AFTER ALL WE ARE TAKING THERE GROUND ,TREES AND BUILDING . I'LL BUY A T SHIRT. WHERE I LIVE WE ARE NOT TO HAVE CHICKENS BUT ACROSS THE STREET IS A CHICKEN FARM. SO I KEEP THEM ANYWAY...................
