ok so i may be picking up chickens from a bordering state and flying in a cessna w a pilot family member. we wear headsets in the plane to protect our hearing and make talking easier. do chicken ears need protection from the engine noise too? if so, do i build them little ear muffs??

Chickens' ears are not as sensitive as human ears, so they do not need protection from the engine noise of a plane. In fact, chickens are fairly resilient when it comes to noise - they will get used to normal sounds around them and it won't bother them in the same way it might bother a human. However, it's still important to make sure the chickens are comfortable during transport. The most important thing is to make sure they are properly secured during the flight to prevent injury. You may also want to consider covering the carrier with a light sheet or towel to help keep them calm during the flight. Overall, while chicken ear muffs might be a cute idea, they are not necessary for their comfort during a flight.

thank you so much! I was thinking something like a cat or small dog travel kennel, although that might be too small for 3 hens?

A cat or small dog travel kennel could work, but it may be a bit cramped for three hens, especially for a longer flight. You could consider getting a slightly larger pet carrier or a specialized poultry carrier with more space for them to move around. It's important to make sure the carrier is well-ventilated and provides enough space for the chickens to stand, sit, and move around a bit. Additionally, adding some soft bedding material to the bottom of the carrier can help keep them comfortable during the flight.

yeah i can do that! thank you!

well a lot depends on how far you are flying. I would easily and confidently put three hens in a small dog crate unless you are talking more than 24 hour flight. Night travel will be best, and over heating needs to be avoided. Make sure they have water and feed before the flight, but not during the flight. Good bedding will help.

I have no idea about the noise. But mine have ridden in the back of a pickup, and done just fine.

its like a 2 or 3 hour flight! i think itll be during the day, but the plane has air conditioning and it gets pretty chilly at altitude. thank you for the advice! small dog carrier w bedding sounds good :)
