They can live a very long time although most do not.
I am always looking at them for anything weird or worrisome. I think it helps that the Cochin's do not lay much.
That is really nice of you I'm constantly making sure my chickens are or look well as well so I really hope they live real long :love my chickens haven't started laying yet but how come them not laying on much is good??
 
Most chickens are bred to lay a lot of eggs each year. That breeding creates a perfect storm for reproductive issues from infection, internal laying, egg binding, cancers and simply draining the body of everything it has.

Like large dogs don't tend to have long lives, chickens bred for production don't either.
 
You said your pullets were 3 months old which is about 12 weeks, and most chickens don't start laying until the 24-30 week mark, they're too young to lay, no need to worry.:)
