Chicken Identity Change!!

Somebody made a comment on an earlier post about the difference in the combs on a Barred Rock and Dominique...sooooo, I went internet hunting for pictures...well, low and behold, I was a newbie given mis-information!! My 7 Dominiques are actually Barred Rocks according to the comb like a fan they have, none of them have a flat flower like comb! Poor chickens, they will be so identity challenged having been called Dominiques for the entire 8 months of their lives!! I guess I have to take back all the posts where I have raved about Dominiques, geez, I am distressed!!!

Don't stress, you're not the first to be victim to misinformation. I grew up thinking all barred chickens were "Dominikers", only to find out that there were two separate breeds, and that true Dominiques are actually kind of hard to come by. I've probably been looking at Barred Rocks all my life.

I hear that from almost every visitor to my place who sees my Hawkeye- Oh, is that a Dominecker? NO, it's a Barred Rock and a completely different breed. They look at me like I sprouted a second head.

Sure makes me feel gullible! The feed store where I bought them told me that, guess I'd really be embarrassed if they had told me they were silkies, haha!!!

Dont feel too bad. Feedstores are so NOT the place to learn about chickens! The last weirdness I picked up was that a cute little Porcelain D'uccle cockerel (I knew that's what he was) was a bearded Cochin!

Dont worry about it i have had a much more embarrising story about chicken breeds when i was just beginning i bought three chicks from the feed mill well they told me that they were barred rocks so when they got older i new that wasn't true for they never got the black and white striping so then i asked tons of what i thought to be very knowledge able chicken people what they were and they told me that they were langshans so for three years i showed them at the county fair and state fair as langshans and they always placed and when i finaly took them to a large pro show i found out they werent langshans at all but australorps

boy was that embarissing for four years i thought they were langshans

i have a cat who lived under my porch when i first moved here. sort of bought it with the house, so to speak.

my various neighbors were convinced that it had gotten their cats pregnant before i moved in. i am not a cat person and figured, well, who would lie about that.

so after months of feeding it but not picking it up, allergies, i did. well.........um, it's a girl cat. or, at the very least, an extremely neutered male with no business left whatsoever.

i felt foolish.

by the way, i have told my neighbors over and over again, pick it up and tell me how it could get your cat pregnant and they won't. cause they still stick to their story. it was THAT cat.

i am thinking of making immaculate conception greetings cards with my stray cats face on it for the neighborhood. lol.

That is funny MJ and sooooo like my story!! Bet your chickens had some identity issues too!!! Know any "fowl" therapists?? hahaha! Guess we should neither one believe everything we hear...I know I'll be more skeptical!! Darlene

Don't feel so bad EGG...........I went to a sale this past spring and asked a lady that had a 24 foot trailer full of birds, what she wanted for her barred rocks? I was told in a very quick, hateful voice.."those are Dominiques"! Well I told her that,"barred rocks have a single comb and doms do not".........She continued to let me know that "these were Doms".Well to make a long story short, when I left, I walked past her trailer and she was arguing with a guy over her birds being Doms and not barred rocks!!!!!! Seems everyone has just considered every chicken with a barred pattern to be a Dom for so long that most still do not know the difference!

Kingscall - I guess everyone I know that has seen my chickens has been as unchicken educated as me because no one ever said different to make me question it! Unlike your sales woman, I would have checked it out and maybe known sooner, hopefully next time you see her she will be selling "Barred Rocks"!!
