One of my little EE hens found her way through a hole in the chain link fence that sits right next to the neighbors wood fence, so there are 2 layers of fence that shhe got between.
The pheasants were making distress signals for a little while before I went out to investiigate. I didn't see anything amiss until I heard flapping noises coming from the tunnel in between the runs.
I looked and saw my little EE girl stuck. I almost had a heart attack, as the DH was at work. He is usually the "chicken rescuer" whenever they get into trouble. I ran to the shed and got the bolt cutters. I cut a section of the chain link fence and manuevered her out. My arms were scraping on the cut wire and I was bleeding pretty profusely. Got blood all over the chicken, but I got her out unscathed.
I've heard about things like this happening with chickens that are not well socialized. Thank goodness I bother the heck out of my chickens constantly, because after she flailed around to get my attention, she sat queitly and waited for me to get the bolt cutters, and chilled while I cut the wire and pulled her out. She didn't struggle once, as if she knew I was there to help her.
She wasn't very friendly as a chick, but now as an adult, she squats for me constantly and actually enjoys getting her "petsies". I think, after this, she actually really knows I am her mama and protector.
My arms hurt now, and are all bandaged up, but the chicken is fine, so I am happy.
