Welcome!! Glad to have you with us. I am working on a book and hope to have time to get it put together!! It would be great to know children besides my own would enjoy her adventure. In fact the way its looking with all the adventures myself and others on this thread have come up with it may end up as a series lol.

Good day and sad day. Big Chicken is doing great! She seems to be integrating into the flock and finding her place. Still cant get her to come running when I throw out scraps but she gets the idea now and knows its food. She hangs out on the edge of the flock but gets her food. She still seems to think im throwing the food at her and not to her lol. But not longer runs very far before turning back around to eat. I take a few moments every night after dark to pet her and talk to her. And I have also been at least giving one pet to each other chicken as well. I have found that the flock in general has become less flighty. So its been interesting to learn what helps.
Sad part is for another one of the flock. We had a marauding dog today.

Heard a big commotion and went out back. First I did not see what was up. All the chickens were running under the porch so I was looking up. Usually its a hawk. And not a real issue because I have plenty of cover. Dint see anything so went back inside. That's when I looked out the front window. Dog was out there with one of my reds. Pulling feathers out of it Poor bird was gone. I ran out and the dog did not run off. Stood its ground over my chicken. NO WAY was I going to let it sit there and eat it. I got a horse lead and made a loop. Got it on the dog and sad to say.....My character cracked....I beat the crap out of that dog. With my hand. Not an instrument but still I feel bad now for it. I tied the chicken round its neck and chased it off. Its owner will get the point better than any note. The flock seemed subdued after that. The coop is minus one tonight.

Oh wow! Horrible day. Sorry you lost your chicken today. That is always a fear of mine, to have the chickens out and a dog come running though. I don't know how I feel about the chicken tied to the dog though. I know I am very careful not to let my dogs run loose but on a rare occasion they slip past a guest at the door. It happens to people from time to time. What if a child found that dog coming back home? Sorry I know your sad about your chicken but I found that distasteful.

I hear you!!! Im not saying I was right. But I was angry. I do however know where the dog lives. Try to understand where we live. I have 8 children. 3 still at home aged 9, 8, and almost 7. If one of our dogs came home with a chicken on its neck they would understand. That dog would be left outside till the chicken rotted off. AND the owner of said chicken would be compensated. I have NEVER done it but out here if your dog gets loose and gets after some ones livestock it gets shot. We love our critters but they are our livelihood. A dog that kills chickens is a bad dog.
We live on over a hundred acres. BUT we keep the dogs fenced in unless we are with them. For this very reason. I don't want someone to shoot one cus I let it run loose. But no one comes in the yard without us being here because of the dogs. Very few people ever come inside the fence. Those people the dogs know and can come in without trouble. Just a different world. The "chicken around the neck" is a classic treatment for a dog that kills a chicken. Because if that don't work. The dog goes. That one chicken accounts for not just a lost pet. Sadness for my children. But for eggs that can be eaten or sold. Add it up and that chicken killing dog cost me over 500 bucks. Not counting the eggs we eat. 500 bucks pays for quite a few shoes, coats, etc. Im not trying to change your view!!! Please don't get me wrong. Just add to your view from my end. We grow our own food and cash money is hard to come by. specially now as winter hits. This winter we will eat what I canned and eggs from the birds. We also have cows rabbits and horses. Think of how you would feel if someone took that much money in groceries from you. Folks round here get that. And most respect that. If they don't....well. they are lucky im not the kind that shoots.

Distasteful, it might have been but the owner is lucky the dog is still alive and that he is unknown. He should be made to bear the full financial brunt of the loss of livestock but for now, if the worst that happens is that his dog is home alive with a dead chicken around its neck then he should count his blessings.
