chicken killed wild bird

Birds can pass stuff to chickens, so if you see a dead one I would not let them eat it. But I think chickens would be carnivores if they could! they love meat.

we get sparrows, doves and cardinals in the chicken yard all the time, the chickens seem to ignore them. We have squirrels that go in the coop and eat their food all the time. Never seen any aggression against them either.

That's mine too. In fact they seem to be under the impression the sparrows can carry you off just like the hawks and scatter when they fly past lol

Had to remove a dead sparrow this morning from the run, or at least the body of it, all ten of our hens were fighting over it. Missy had the sparrows head in her mouth and it took some real convincing and a peck or two just to get it away from her... didn't want her/them to eat it as they carry disease... blah... what a way to start the day..

Glad to have found this thread! My "head pullet," Gretta, is an orpington cross and she always chases finches and sparrows and almost goes ballistic. Just now she almost threw herself at our fence trying to get at a couple! I have never seen her chubby self "fly" that high before! She lives with 3 silkies and is super protective of them since they can't see well. It's kind of cute... but not cute if she actually caught a bird!

Ours did this. The wild bird managed to make its way back out of the chicken wire but then promptly expired. I would guess it is a territorial thing.

I have found several finches dispatched near my feeders but they are all intact. I know that chickens are carnivorous due to them killing and eating one of my Cornish game roos. Guess the just don't like the little birds.
