Chicken laid in my garage

I let my chickens out so I can clean the coop. One just dropped a egg that was soft in the garage and now they are trying to eat it. Is this normal these are my first chickens that are laying they have been laying for about 2 months. Could just not like how dirty the coops is this is late in the day to even lay

The time of day that chickens lay eggs varies (they aren't evenly spaced 24 hours apart) so it was probably just coincidental timing.

Thank you have you ever seen them try to eat it? I don’t smell anything as I’m cleaning the coop my husband was worried about ammonia but I don’t smell anything

Anything can be food if it looks tasty! Chickens purposefully breaking eggs to eat them can be a problem (not saying that's what's happening here).

yea no it was a soft egg so it just broke right away You can see the soft shell in picture. Thanks again for the help

Welcome to BYC. if the hens are new to laying and they are out of their coop - they will have the egg where ever they get the urge. Plus it being a soft egg the chick may not have known she was laying. - I try to make sure everyone has laid before I let mine out - even if they are old hens they can start a bad habit of hiding their eggs really easily. When I do let them out I make sure to leave the door open to the nest so they can run back in if they feel the urge.

thank you!I didn’t even think of it because one is a little younger so normally we got 2-3 eggs, 1 might not lay and I had the two eggs in there and my husband was worried about cleaning the coop so I just let them out.

I was more worried that my husband was right on the ammonia and then not wanting to lay in there, and also that they were trying to eat it

Make sure all your laying hens have access to oyster shell for calcium.
