Hi all! I believe a couple of my chickens may have lice. Pulling feathers, red irritated patches of skin where the feathers have been pulled. I have tried diatomaceous earth once and will be applying it again here soon (it's been a few weeks since the last application) but my question is how do you keep chicken lice away for good?? Best coop maintenance ideas please? How to be sure my girls and guys dont get this anymore? Help!

Throw away or the DE or face them forever... It won't help an infestation.

I treat with permethrin spray. It is effective, safe, affordable, easy to use, no withdrawal for eggs, labeled for use in chickens and works on MANY parasites...

Thing is that DE is very ineffective in many environments and when it comes to health we can't afford to mess around. I'm ALL for natural and organic IF it works.

Good luck! :fl

Ok, I have got a broody hen and a broody duck right now. My hen is days within hatching her eggs and my duck is a week or 2 out. Is this stuff safe for developing babies and new hatchlings?? Can I keep eggs laid after application of the spray?

Yes, on all accounts. :thumbsup

I have broody's galore with chicks, hatched more than a 100 others this year alone, and eat egg laid the same day or anytime.

You will need to treat again in 7-10 days depending on pest, according to directions label. I do so after roost/dark (keeping it dim) so I don't have to chase anyone. And I cannot say enough about the value of having a head lamp flash light. :)

Permethrin is the ONLY active ingredient. It does sell under other brand names like Martins and so on, careful other ingredients are only inert. This one doesn't require measuring or mixing, others may. The bottle costed me under $8 and lasted 2+ years with 82+ birds, 2 large goats, and 3 medium dogs. I bought it to keep the mosquitoes off and discovered the many other uses including lice, mites (not scaly leg or depluming), fleas and so on. While it is safe, I don't use more often than needed because parasite can build resistance. One reason it is especially important to follow up in the correct amount of days. If you know you can't then schedule for when you can.

Part feathers and spray directly on skin, just a small spritz. It doesn't need to run off or soak the bird. Do this just below the vent, under each wing pit, and nape of the neck at base of head. Return bird to roost or chosen location. It also is OK to spray under the roost and in nest boxes. I even do my coop floor sometimes, but I do that when all birds are already out and done for the day. I wouldn't spray any hatching eggs directly but would likely still spray the broody nest when I have her off for treatment.

I couldn't figure out how much the shipping cost was but here is one link where it is for sale. My locations, first one came from local feed store. Now they have it at grange but not at TSC (this specific product). But if shipping isn't bad then n either is the price...

Please note for small chicks I might use a wet swab to dab them gently being sure to avoid the eyes.

I did go to my local feed store this morning and this is the ONLY thing they had so I thought I would give it a try. What do you think? Also, thank you so much for all the information! It is greatly appreciated!

Here are some good brands of permethrin. Some are to be mixed with water and used with a sprayer (best buy,) and some come ready to use:

That product has “natural ingredients.” With an outbreak, I would get something with permethrin.
