Chicken LORE Project - Find & Submit Local Chicken Laws & Ordinances

This is a great tool, but it may be incomplete. Or, rather, in your researches to decide whether your community allows chickens, you may have to do a bit more digging.

I've only really looked at New Orleans, as I'm familiar with the zoning designations and setup of the ordinance documents.

I know that New Orleans has various zones (Single Family Residential, Multi Family Residential, Industrial, Light Industrial, etc), and that each zone has a different set of allowed uses (tho some, of course, overlap).

New Orleans does not specify "you may have 6 chickens per household" anywhere. I've searched "poultry", "fowl", "Chicken", "livestock"... finally came up with this:

My residential zone (R1-A) does not allow kennels. In the definitions section of the CZO, Kennels are defined as: "Domestic Animal Kennel, Commercial. The keeping of any dogs, cats or other domestic animals, regardless of number, for sale, breeding, boarding or treatment purposes except in an animal hospital, pet beauty parlor, or pet shop, as permitted by these regulations, or the keeping of five (5) or more domestic animals or fowl, six (6) months or older, on premises used for residential development, or the keeping of more than one (1) domestic animal on vacant property or on property used for business or commercial purposes. "

Therefore, I have inferred that I may keep up to 4 animals (chickens) per residential address (I have two addresses. Woo!). So, between my 2 cats, my tenant's 2 cats and 1 dog, I may have 3 additional chickens. Or I may assume that my scaredy cat will hide, and one of her cats will hide, so then I can have 5 chickens.

THEN the animal-related codes (accessed via the BYC L.O.R.E search for New Orleans) come into effect: Keep the pen clean and stench-free, don't attract rats, etc.

Also, there are restrictions against nuisance animals that make recurring annoying noises, therefore roosters would *not* be allowed in New Orleans, tho the code does not expressly prohibit roosters. (I don't have the time to find the verbage of this at present, but it's what I recall from my previous researches).

So, it's not just the animal keeping section of the code, but how that relates to each person's property's zone and the allowable uses thereof, and any related definitions. These documents are convoluted and difficult to read. It took me a couple months of searching and discussing it before I became confident of my interpretation.

Thank you for working on this tool... it is already very helpful, and as the users of the forum continue to contribute it can be dialed in ever more precisely.

ETA: also, the ordinances per zone will have information re where/how one can build a coop (aka "accessory structure"): distance from property lines, max height, where height is figured (in my area, height of a building is taken at the MIDPOINT of a sloped roof!), etc.

Thanks Joz!

We thought really hard about how much information we wanted to capture. In the end, it is up to the user to do the final research ---there is no way we could keep things 100% up-to-date. There are just too many variables involved: HOAs, grandfathered negihborhoos, zoning restrictions, people with variance permits....

BUT-- at least we are giving folks a starting point

Wow! We had a wonderful response to the LORE project this weekend. Thank you, everyone!

Please make sure you check the city list before you submit a city. If the city is already verified or submitted, entering the same city causes issues with the database. We want to make sure you get SCRATCH for all the hard work you do!

If you see a city that needs changes, please PM Coopa Cabana or myself. We can edit when necessary.

FOLKS: we have been recieving a HUGE number of repeat submittals. We cannot give Scratch for a city that has already been submitted and verified. Please check the list before you submit a city. Repeat submittals cause issues with the database.

You can see if your city already exists here:

Need help if possible.

I live outside the city limits, and there are no county or state restrictions on fowl.

BUT!!!!!! I finally received a copy of the deed and there is a clause for no pig/swine and poultry, but everything else is included (as in I can have goats, cows, horses, but no chickens or pigs

).

Any help on how to get this changed? I wouldn't even have the first clue where to turn for help (besides all the wonderful folks at BYC.com).

Would this come down to a title/deed change, or can it be changed, or do I have to change it?

The original land owner, to my understanding, split their land up and sold it as a subdivision. The original land owner sold the property to my gf's parents a while back (say 10-15 years ago) and now my gf is wanting to buy the land from her mom (her father passed). Would this simply be a redo of the deed?

Thanks for any help...

Andrew- You'll get a better response if you post a thread in the "Local chicken laws & ordenances (and how to change them) forum. This thread is specific to the LORE project, you thread hijacker, you

Ok, I really want that Gold Feather year so I've submitted 15 cities so far. (Only 3 left right?)
How do I know if they've all passed and that I've gotten a scratch point for them?

Just wondering.
Thanks

When we verify the info in your cities is complete/correct, we'll put a date in the spreadsheet. Then you accumulate enough Scatch, we'll send an email to Nifty to get your GFM rollin!

Great thanks. I just submitted another one but it was for Sioux Falls SD. Their city code isn't online but I called and spoke to the head animal guy.. I don't know if that'll count but I put his number on the submission.
Thanks for the quick reply!

When do we get our Golden Feather Membership?

Hello all, I can imagine how busy everyone is with this project. What a great idea. I was just curious when those who submitted and had their submissions accepted will receive their Golden Feather membership? I submitted mine for Boise Idaho and it looks like it is posted verbatim as I posted it. Yay! But I haven't received my Golden Feather Membership.. any idea when we will get these?
