Chicken mama newbie! Needs help!!

Hello all! I’m a new chicken mama in North Carolina near Greensboro. I have eight -5 month old birds. I have RIR, Americana, Wyandotte, beilfelder, 2-black stars, 2-australorps.

My Americana is not doing well. Two weeks ago she started laying her blue eggs (only bird I have with blue eggs). She layed every other day for a week. The second week she started laying two eggs every day. As of today, she layed one soft rubbery like egg, and then just the clear part of an egg passed with it. She is lethargic, but was eating and drinking today.im assuming she could be calcium deficient because of the double egg laying. What should I do? Give calcium citrate/D3? If so, dosage? I’m so worried. Don’t want to lose her. Your help is greatly appreciated. Bcot

Welcome to BYC. I'm sorry you're having problems.
I would give her a dose of calcium.
Do they have access to calcium/oyster shell?
What are you feeding?

Hi, welcome to the flock! Sorry you are dealing with this. Just give her a calcium tablet every day for 5 to 7 days. Just pop it right in her beak and let her swallow it.

Welcome to BYC! We are glad you are here, but sorry for this trouble! We have dealt with the soft-shelled eggs in our flock using calcium and D3. I cannot recall the dosage. But it did seem to help!

I have had a few scares myself regarding egg shells. I have not had to go to Calcium pills yet, but I have given the girls scrambled eggs with plenty of smashed shells in them, given them pulverized raw shrimp with shells and tails, and made oyster and gravel readily available. I cannot help but think a good dose of clean water with probiotics and enzymes cannot do anything but help move these minerals through the chickens' little bodies, which should be helpful. I know it's nerve-wracking. Just act fast.

hello welcome to BYC. I just give one of these daily when they are having a problem like that for a couple days or few days you can give one a day. I don’t know how much longer may be up to a week but don’t quote me on that.

The usual calcium citrate with D 3 dosage is 300 mg up to 600 mg for a 5 pound hen. It can be given once a day if egg binding is suspected or up to 7 days if laying soft or shell-less eggs.
