Chicken math has begun, but one small problem…

My darling husband. I just picked up my very first chicks on Monday. 5 Ameraucanas. The feed store I got them from posted they got some more chicks in, including black Australorps and lavender Orpingtons. I want to get 2 each. Hubby says no. So now I got to come up with a good argument so he’ll say yes.

If you got Straight Run you could have at least 3 males, maybe more. Getting more chicks means better chance for females.

I know what my wife tries to pull when she wants something. It always works, and isnt really BYC friendly

Hmm, my husband just kinda joined my wild chicken math the first two years, the third year we made it through with no additions, but this year "we" said no more chickens and now I have 11 chicks in the brooder. This wouldn't work for you as you don't have any older hens yet, but I had one go broody and kept mentioning how if we wanted we could just simply pop some little chicks under her and let her raise them. After about 2 weeks he said fine, get some darn chicks if you want. So when we went to the feed store to get chicken feed (wink wink) by the time we walked around the store he asked if I wanted chicks, ummm, YES! He asked me how many, so I asked him back how many he was thinking and he said 4, so we left with 7 because he wanted the SLW and I wanted some EEs. Then he said no more chicks unless they were Polish or Silkies, what do ya know, there were silkies at the next feed store we went to 2 weeks later.

So, not sure what advice to give you, unless you can find a breed he just can't live without. But, do keep in mind it is nice to have multiple ages of chickens so if only having your current number this year means you can get a couple more next year, that's something to consider too

x2. Do you actually have room for more birds? Also keep in mind that for optimal egg production it'd be better to stagger the ages of your flock by a year or more, as egg production decreases over time.

I'm like the anti-chicken math-er lol, they're "my" chickens but hubby keeps asking for more, and my usual argument is 1) we don't have room for as many as he'd like and 2) we already struggle to eat all the eggs we get.
