Chicken Math. Or "The story of how I didn't want chickens and got hooked"

I wanted 6 chickens, that is all I wanted. I got eight chicks assuming they wouldn't all make it. They did. Now my neighbor tells me he has two surprise roosters and wants to give me one, it has no place else to go. That makes nine. Its only a matter of time till somebody goes broody and I give in. This chicken math is more confusing than high school algebra. There is a mysterious force at work in this universe that we are all helpless to understand or fight. One that decides the number of chickens, we are helpless against it.

I know how you feel! this is our first year ever having a broody chicken and we've had chickens for some time now, we let her hatch 16 eggs knowing most wouldnt make it. ended up with 12 all four weeks now. And just recently another chicken went broody! And of course with my love of birds i let her hatch some eggs, Shes currently sitting on eight duck eggs! i'm praying the only four will hatch considering our last time experience with hatching ducks, 2/16 hatch and one has a limp

Similar situation here. I have a broody sitting o 5 developing duck eggs (Magpie). They are on day 7.

it's super hot in AZ, so some of the girls are on inside confinement this week, and they're not exactly thrilled about it. Marilyn the Tolbunt Polish, in particular, is sick of my crap.
