Chicken Math Strikes Again

I had to get food last weekend so I ran to TSC and they had chicks. Ours has only ever had them in the spring so I asked why they had them. The cashier told me it was a new nationwide campaign all the TSC are doing and will have chicks through mid September, I think is when he said. So if he was correct all of your TSC stores should have chicks right now.

Interesting. The closest TSC to us is in Idaho about 1 1/2 hours away. I usually only go there if I need something specific that they carry or happen to be going that direction for something else.

Lol That's true. Right now all my hens are contained in 2 runs, with no proper nest boxes or anything.
I was promised a large shed from someone who didn't want it anymore, but they have to clean it out first, and it's taking FOREVER!
I might just buy them a coop online...
Does anyone know where I could find a coop under $500 that could hold 15 standard chickens? I've done a lot of searching.

Does anyone know where I could find a coop under $500 that could hold 15 standard chickens? I've done a lot of searching.

Aside from building one yourself I don’t know where to get one under that price for that many birds. What I can say is that for the prefab ones, if it says up to 15 birds, it is probably more like 10-12. Ours was advertised for 18-20 birds, and our 15 are snug in there. We ended up buying a second smaller coop just to have a little more roosting/laying space for them.

But! I know there are tons of DIY coop designs out there, and with places like Habitat for Humanity Restore, Craigslist, and Letgo it’s very easy to find building materials cheap or even free in some cases. We built our first coop out of pallets we got for free, the only thing we spent money on was the hardware (screws, bolts, hinges, latches, etc). So if you’re on a budget, it may be worth looking into that, or even checking Craigslist etc, for cheap sheds or other structures you could convert into a coop

My wife tells everybody who will listen about Chicken Math. She says, there is no adding or subtracting in Chicken Math, only multiplying.

Welp. Chicken Math strikes again. We went to TSC for mouse traps, and #ChickDays got the best of us.... again. We left with week old Calico Princess chicks in tow. It’s like they have little magnets, and they gravitate toward us.

Y’all. We have a 15 hen limit. We currently have a flock of 12 layers, and now 12 chicks (we hatched 7 EEs last week, and 2 the month before). I’m gonna need to get real friendly with our neighbors I think!

Hahahaha!!! Omg! This is SO funny cause i am ALWAYS explaining this to everyone! Chicken math gets very out of hand, very quickly. Lol. Ive mentioned this here as well.

My TSC just had ameraucanas but, one of the employees actually advised me not to buy from them!! It was crazy. But, I've actually been steering clear of them and, buying from breeders anyway. A couple have actually been the employees there! Lol. My birds have been 100% healthier since, i can honestly say that so far.

Nope. And don’t be fooled by any prefab coop that is advertised as such. Fifteen birds in a prefab for < $500. It ain’t gonna happen! Trust me. What’s the old saying? “Been there, done that!” Ugh!
