CHICKEN MATH STRIKES AGAIN

no i am not setup for them yet ...but now everyone knows where i get my chicken math from....if my chicken house had not burned down I would have bought them...but I have to get it rebuilt first.

I wanted only 4 max. I had rooster and 1 hen. adopted 2 and found a stray = 5. The rooster is mean so we will be minusing 1 in a few weeks and then adding one rooster and one more hen. So.... now I have 6. I think Im doing a pretty good job :D!

Update to previous post. Four weeks after hatch: Broody hen hatched one of four. Incubator hatched twenty: Lost two in the first week, one to failure to thrive, one to wry neck. Currenty tally: Original 11 sex-links, 12 Salmon Favorelles (6 girls/6boys), 4 Mottled Houdans, 2 Araucanas, and one lonely White Silkie. Total: 30

To be continued, as there is only space for about 20 in the hen house.

I think I found my calling. Chicken math! I wanted 10 so I got 20. Then a rescued rooster. Then I wanted some color(I had all Red Star at the time) So I ordered Chicks. Mind there is a 25 chick minimum. Then I went to get feed and came home with turkey poults. Now a teacher friend of mine is giving me her classroom hatching chicks. Oh and let's not forget the 30 CornishX we put up. And this is within one year and after building three coops! And I thought math wasn't my strong suit!

I have 37 coming in and I took my mother to do her shopping the other day and when we got to the hardware store they had baby chicks 20% off so she told me to buy them all there was only 200

Shame you didn't have room for them...

I am a social worker/bereavement counselor for a hospice. We see the phrase "failure to thrive" as a diagnosis for some of our clients. Are you in the health field since you used that phrase?
I started out with 2-6 month old chickens, Red the Rooster (RIR) and Goldie (Brown Leghorn). Bought 15 from a hatchery (kept 6 and gave away the rest). Then 16 the next year and put them in a different area/yard. Now have another batch of 22 4-week old chicks. Plus, I decided to let my buff go broody and Wed. she hatched out 2 (out of 6 eggs). First time letting a hen hatch eggs. Needless to say, they are precious! Watching them interact with mama is priceless! Now a friend has week old Easter Eggers she is going to give me. So I hope THAT's IT for a while!
