Chicken Math Will Get You Every Time

It sounds like a wonderful plan. I so wish I could talk my hubby into buying property. We have a postage stamp size yard but it isn't stopping me from doing a little more chicken math this spring. I just pulled out my incubator this week and am planning to set eggs after Valentine's day. I won't be able to get away with a goat or a pig though.

I have 6 in my tub right now. They are young and I didn't want the cold to get to them. Ok they are like 5 months old but really little chickens so they could be passed off as chicks. Hahaha

So what describes my situation? It cannot be as simple as Chicken Math any more; it must be Chicken Trigonometry by now! I've got the "unknown" bit down: I don't know how many chickens I have, because I refuse to count them. When asked, I say, "A lot." When they say, "Guess!" I say, "More than 20." (If you ever visited, you would automatically know I'm not very good with numbers.... but it IS a true statement.)

I am amazed that 12 of 16 eggs have hatched out of my current batch. SO FAR! I don't normally get that high a hatch rate - and these are shipped eggs!

Just got 24 more eggs in the mail today. Got 12 call duck eggs in two 'bators right now.

But, oh my goodness, I am as happy as a clam at high tide!

Hi, My name is Pat, and I'm a chickenholic.

It happened again! I was coming home from my V.A. doctor's appointment and saw a sign!
Not that kind of a sign, it was one that said CHICKS TODAY. It was at the place where I had bought my Cochins, so I stopped just to say hi and see what they had.
I knew better, but I did it anyway.
She had told me that they had some Light Brahmas in the incubator and I wanted to see the chicks. By the way, they were really nice. But, that is not what caught my eye. She had some chicks from a cross that her father had come up with years ago that lay pink, white and blue eggs. He named them American Patriot because of the red, white and blue eggs. Kind of corny, but they were cute as they could be. So, all of a sudden I was heading home with five of them. I am glad I didn't have more cash on me or I would have taken a few more. They are in the brooder and seem happy with their new home. I will try to post some pics as soon as I can.

My mom and I kind of did it that way. I buy free range eggs and it was getting expensive and thought I would love to have chickens. We read the laws and realized we could have some. (We rent my moms house and she and dad live in the poolhouse, so it is the same yard). Ok so we have a guy that was going to give us some eggs and let us borrow the incubator.

We built our coop before the eggs came, but decided we did not want to wait for egg and wanted hens, so we asked to buy some from him. He just gave us two hens. The eggs we tried to hatch out we not fertile, so we decided to go get some chicks. WE came home with two BR pullets and 5 chicks.

LOL... your chicken math is a bit wrong though... this is chicken math...

my friend got a pair... i said, i just want a nice rooster... i got a crele OEGB rooster... then he seamed lonely... so i got him two hens... then i started to get on web forums and looking at pictures i decided to get four more different variation/colors of OEGB... so i decided in self blue, mille fleur, isabel, blue, and crele... and that ended me up with 30+ chickens... so a correct chicken math equation would be 5 different colors of chickens equals 30 birds... and an incubator...

amirite guys...?

Maybe I should just walk away now. I think ya'll may be the people my mother warned me about

Our coop is still in the pile-of-lumber stage. I couldn't wait and picked up 6 (2-Ameraucanas/2-Red Sex Link/2-Welsummer) then my husband wanted white egg layers, so I went and picked up 2 Buff Minorca's . While I was there the cutest little Light Brahma caught my eye, I had to have her. Now, as I read the posts of all you seasoned chicken folk, I look up the breeds you speak of and dream of the day....
