Chicken Math

Pics
I started with 6 but the chicken math hit our family hard. My husband begrudgingly agreed we could get “a few chickens” that ended up being 6 including the one our neighbor gave us. Now we have built a good size coop and are expecting 9 more chicks September. At least I can say the chickens have won over my husband, his mother (a minor miracle lol), my mother and a good few of the neighborhood kids mostly thanks to our black frizzle cochin bantam’s very very fluffy butt and winning personality.
This last bunch, a mail order I think has my husband a little more interested in them. We lost some from our last store bought and he is more attentive to these.

Me too! Same numbers and everything come September when my chick order comes. Even got the neighbor that gave me my original chicken in on the chicken math and he is getting 2 more with my order.
My fears are coming true again, my daughter thinks at least 3 (possibly more) of my 5 silkies are Cockerels. Might try mail ordering, maybe ask hubby which ones I should get lol. See if he takes the bait!

We inherited 3 and a coup when we bought our house...the people before left them. I now have over 40...I think 42 on the last count...two new coups and a couple of brooders in the garage. Also have a couple of hens with chicks!!...oh, and not to mention the silkies in the dining room that my daughter just got!!
Me to a tee! 7 in the coop, 5 silkies in the family room, now 8 (4 are my daughters) in the dining room!

Back in August we kind of let our older chickens die off and we would get some new ones for the flock

We had 2 then 1 died the other one was devastated so we got her 4 pullet friends and then quickly that turned into 2 more pullet friends one pullet friend died so we got a hen to be her friend and then we got 3 more to show and then we got two eggs and hatched them and now have 12

1 to 12 in 6 months
I went from 5 - 16 from March till now!

I’ve been trying to figure out if my husband has a breed preference (so I can buy more ) and he really likes our silkies.

Mostly, my husband just likes keeping me happy, and chickens do that. I do 95% of the chicken duties so he’s happy I’m happy.

Planned on 2 or 3 bantams since we have such a small coop right now, had plans to get more once we convert our shed into a big coop.
Got 2 silkies & a sebright, all 3 months old...1 silkie died within a week: 2.

Breeder offered to replace silkie with a day old silkie chick, planned on buying a second chick so it wouldn't be lonely...breeder last minute offered an ayam cemani to go with the silkie chick. Went to feed store to pick up these two chicks: ended up with 4 (only 1 bantam).

Grand total now: 6... :clap
Working very fast to get our big coop set up by the time the 4 chicks are old enough! lol
Oooh; I hope you protect that little silkie from the ayam cemani. Silkies are VERY docile!

I love you chicken math lol. That's how I was exactly! Even up to the not leaving one, went for so many and then I got to the register I had accidentally picked one extra! :yesss: hubby said just get it, it was already boxed with it's friends. :love

When we got down to one old OEGB hen, my husband was hoping I'd "gotten over" the chicken thing. (We now have 3 small coops.) Hahahaha.
When I was young I was attacked by a roo; it was like getting hit in the shin with a hammer! The last thing I was interested in was chickens. Then an OEGB hen popped under the fence, took a drink from our pond, and stood next to me, looking up, talking anxiously; it was getting dark. Sigh. Can't let cats get her...
Emily stole our hearts.
Now when I check out "house for sale" signs, I automatically rule out those in surrounding suburbs that don't allow chickens.
Now, to the chicken math: I order from a hatchery 1-1/2 hrs. away, and I pick them up so they don't have to go through shipping. I went to pick up the 3 Eggers I had on prepaid order. I really wanted ONE E.E., one Orpington, and one Welsummer, but E.Eggers were all that were to be available. At the counter: "You wouldn't have any leftover Buff Orpingtons, would you? "We DO!" Look, I know you probably don't, but figured I'd ask; any leftover Welsummers? "3!" May I have one, please? Hi, honey--this was an accident...
