Chicken Math?

I don't have any chickens yet, 5 arrive next week. But already I am wanting more and wondering where I can get some easily.. Luckily for me the feed stores only sell in sets of 12 and my coop only will hold 8!

I hope chicken math doesnt hit us, we are aiming for 4-5 laying hens.

Last year I started with three (1 Australorp, 2 Buff Orpingtons). All survived and all was good. Then my two BO's died and I replaced them with two adult Barred Rocks. DD will be showing the Australorp from the original batch this year for 4-H (her first poultry project). She's really enjoying it and I'm so proud of her. In preparation for DD's 4-H Laying Hen project NEXT year, I've order two more but have gotten "approval" - (yeah right, LOL), from hubby to get a third. Told him yesterday that I wasn't sure about a third but when we pick up the two we ordered, if farm store had one lonely girl, she'd probably be coming home with us. We joked that they wouldn't even get the full question out before I'd say "I'll take it!" LOL!

This on top of a new larger coop this year that is almost finished. Just waiting for the weather to clear up so we can paint. Last year hubby didn't want to have anything to do with MY project. Now he can't wait to let the girls out and give them treats. Sucker!!! LOL!

hmmm let me take a shot at this:

wanted 3-4
bought 12
dogs subtracted 11
bought 6
bought 6 more
1 died
bought 6 more
wanted no roo's
have 3 roo's
hen hatched 8
= 26

hey I think I'm ready for chicken calculus

To bad they dont teach chicken math in highschool!

okay lets see my chicken math...
hatched 3
got rid of 1
got 3 more
1 died
that leaves me at
= 4 chickens!!!

I can't even keep track!! We have around 14 hens and 4 roos that are about 2 years old.

Of course we aren't getting enough eggs so got 15 more chicks and a turkey a month ago (had a few more that died) & then a week later decided to add 4 easter egg layers to the bunch.

On Thursday, I just received an order of 2 geese, 5 turkeys, 6 ducks, and ordered 15 bantams, they shipped 17. The male goose and 2 turkeys did not make it

So I will obviously have to place another order to replace the goose & turkeys & add some chicks to meet the requirements

& there are 2 more kinds of ducks I want to order too.

& I have no clue what we are going to be at (maybe around 40ish) but I know it's more than we ever planned on

HeeHee! Mine are coming on the 23rd or 24, and I'm already planning for more chickens, plus those turkey poults sure are cute, and ducks, plus geese, I mean didn't you see Fly Away Home??and don't forget the Nigerian Dwarf Goats......I keep stressing the Dwarf part to my poor husband...he's such a city-boy, and is starting to get a little concerned....at least I'm no longer talking about a herd of Alpaca!!

Oh and today we saw a darling Pot-Bellied piglet.....

My chicken math:
Thought city ordinance allowed 3
Told hubby I'd be getting 6
Ordered 8 in case some died
Picked up the 8 and realized they looked lonely and small in that big ol' brooder

Went to the local feed store same day and got 4 more
Waited a week and went to browse the feed store again, it was my birthday so of course bring home 3 more
Hubby officially thinks I'm off my rocker to have 15 chickens in the house
Found out yesterday I can actually have 19-20 chickens on my size of property!!!

SERIOUSLY considering going back for 4-5 more this week before the age difference gets too big

I now have 15 pullets but will end up with 20 before next year
