Started out with 2 RIR that I got for Mothers day. Needed more for eggs got 6 RIR wanted variety got 6 barred rocks 5 ended up roos so had to go back and get 2 more a barred rock and black australorp both ended up roos. Still didnt have enough pullets rehomed all but 2 BR roos. need more girls for 2 roos. Ordered 10 from Ideal. 9 DOA and one lonely chick so went to a farm got 7 one ended up roo. ordered 6 hatching eggs 3 broke on arrival one cracked 3 days later 2 left in bator due to hatch this weekend. Since all 6 wont make it needed a few more went to another farm, bought 6, 3 BR 1 delaware 1 Black australorp and 1 RIR man threw in 3 barnyard mix. Going to go get 2 dozen more hatching eggs. Told DH if he doesnt get my coop enlarged before winter he loses his shed.

I wanted 3 or 4 chickens to turn out in the garden. During 'research' I found 3 breeds that I wanted (BO, BR and EE) so planned to buy 2 of each. Feedstore only had straight run for Easter so I went to a hole in the wall feedstore and they had Golden Comets. Not on the list, but they all had pasty butt, so I felt obligated to 'rescue' 2 of them.
Another feedstore had BR and Brahmas. Brahmas were not on the list, but they were REALLY cute!! 2 each = 4 +2 = 6

A week later my feedstore had EEs so I got 3 (supposed to be 2?) and 2 RIRs (not on the list). So 6+3+2 = 11.

Then one of the other feedstores got BOs and Jersey Giants. Giants weren't on the list, got 2 of each. 11+2+2= 15

One of the BOs died (RIP Nugget) so I went for a replacement and got 2. 15-1+2=16


For once in my life, I have mastered a math subject!! WOOT!

Here's how I figger' it. Wife wants a (few) Seramas. OK, give or take 3 to 5. Now to me that means I get to get 25 Heritage Breed RIRs and another 25 Of I haven't decided. That would give me 76................Hmmmmm 24 more and that would be an even 100..................Ahhhh why not.

I am now calling it poultry math as... We went to get chicks from a lady we know- ended up with 12 "older" chicks (they were no longer in the cute stage) So I ordered WAY too many "shipping" costs were what sealed the deal on the too many ordered. Ordered 65. 36 came in July still waiting for the rest.... While waiting for the chicks I decided the one silkie was sad and wanted some of his own kind and found some on craigslist. Drove WAY too far with my three kids in tow to pick out these chicks and came home with 4 silkie chicks (I am thinking they are all roosters so we may end up trying to get silkie hens next year). Have told DH all summer NO DUCKs on a weak moment I ordered ducks for his birthday and in my mind thought they were the same as the chickens that we have had success with all summer and I ordered 10 of each breed I thought he would like or 30 in total. They sent 33 but two died in the mail.

Throughout the summer we have had an invasion of my darn dog to decrease some of the chicken population As such I am down to 8 bigger ones and I think 30 smaller chicks + 4 silkie chicks and 31 ducklings.

i did the chicken math on my calculator, guess what happend. it blew up and started smoking. guess i got to many.....

Initially we wanted six, but I got the chicken bug and went for four more once the initial six were settled. Then, I got to thinking about next spring (which was last spring) and which breeds I would like. I got six birds, as I had intended, but then when the Barnevelders didn't come in at my favorite store, I went and got two Cuckoo Marans and a Silkie and was given Free Bird, an EE. We gave away two roosters, and one bird had to be helped out of her misery due to reproductive issues, so that meant we needed more. Right?

So, low and behold, one of the Marans goes broody, and all my husband can think of is breaking her broodiness, but she will have none of it. I got some free mixed eggs, and she is sitting. YAY!!!! More fuzzy butts! Everything makes sense so far? I can hardly wait for our little chickies! This is ninja chicken math. I am sure my husband does not yet see it coming.

Yeah, that broody thing is a part of the chicken math equation I didn't expect. Here I was, settled in with my six girls, which were only originally going to be four, but oh well. It is all the fault of my Leghorn, who was sold to me as an "Ameraucana", and when it became obvious she was not an Ameraucana, BF bought me an EE, also called "Ameraucana", but it was a chick and just too lonely, so got a Olive Egger to be her friend. Now the dang Leghorn that has already caused me to get two extra chicks is BROODY, for the second time in two months!! It took two weeks to break her last month, so this time I'm giving in and getting some REAL Ameraucana eggs for her to sit on - and oh yeah, a few Blue Plymouth Rock eggs, too. 'Cause I love those Rocks.
